Cabinet approves India-Saudi Arabia MoUs in smuggling, drug trafficking

The UnionCabinet on Wednesday approved the Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) inkedbetween Saudi Arabia and India in the field of combating illicit traffickingand smuggling of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and chemicalprecursors.

The UnionCabinet on Wednesday approved the Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) inkedbetween India and Saudi Arabia in the field of combating illicittrafficking and smuggling of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances andchemical precursors. The MoUs shall facilitate and enhance the cooperationbetween the two countries in combating illicit trafficking and smuggling ofnarcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and chemical precursors, as defined bythe United Nations International Drug Control Conventions.

Thecooperation will also provide a provision for the exchange of relevant informationas well as methods, identities and suspicious activities of producers,smugglers and traffickers of narcotic drugs, details of trafficking of NDPS andPrecursors Chemicals on requisitions and financial details of the traffickersarrested on drug-related charges. Illegal Drug trafficking is a global illicittrade. Massive production and circulation of drugs through various convenientroutes especially through Afghanistan is paving ways for high consumption ofdrugs amongst youth thus creating a negative impact on public health and addingto the criminalisation of the society.

Drugtrafficking has also provided funding for insurgency and terrorism in variousregions throughout the world. Narco-terrorists and international criminalorganizations that thrive on the illegal drug trade now threaten the securityof many nations.
