Heritage Commission Launches Phase I of Archaeological Survey Project in Al-Jouf Region

Under the directions of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture, who is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Heritage Commission, and starting from Al-Jouf Region and the Northern Borders, the Heritage Commission launched phase one of the archaeological survey and documentation of stone structures project designed to fulfill the need to document stone structures in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The survey project is one of the leading archaeological projects worldwide, given the fact that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia accommodates the largest number of stone structures in the world, with their diverse shapes, sizes and functions.

Through its phases, the project will provide important and valuable information on environmental, cultural and social conditions regarding the nature of these structures in order to enrich information sources about the Paleolithic period.

It also focuses on the importance of documenting and preserving stone structures at the national level, and highlighting the pivotal civilizational role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in global human civilization as well as investment in the environmental, cultural and tourism fields.

It is worth mentioning that the Heritage Commission has earlier announced a scientific project involving the study and documentation of stone structures in cooperation with Saudi and international universities and research centers specializing in the overall field of archaeology.
