Jazan Region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is distinguished by its rich heritage that has been represented through many shapes and images. Jazan’s heritage is demonstrated via the traditions and social customs of the celebration of the holy month of Ramadan. Jazan Region is also famous for its traditional food, which is always present within Iftar (Breaking-fast) meals.
The Saudi housewives in Jazan Region have promoted Ramadan customs and traditions, as they provided their kitchen with pottery and stone utensils such as Al-Mughash and Al-Barma, which are used to cook and prepare the region’s popular foods.
In Jazan Region, families are keen on the dinner meal, which is usually after the Taraweeh prayer. This meal is cooked in a Miffa or clay oven, which are made in a traditional way and sold in the markets of the region. Using the Miffa, families place inside it a stone pot to cook the Ramadan soup or Al-moghash which is a traditional dish made from meat and vegetables. Moreover, families use the Miffa to bake their traditional bread, which consists of corn grains that have been carefully ground through the traditional stone mill.
As for the suhoor meal, Al-Mafalt is the main dish in Jazan, due to its high nutritional value. It consists of boiled milk added to it small pieces of crumble flour, whether from white, brown or millet flour. The dish is served by adding sugar or honey or even without them.
