Lowcock: Saudi Arabia is the largest donor to Yemen Response Plan

Mark Lowcock, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, affirmed here Saturday that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the largest donor to Yemen Response Plan, as it provided the plan with over $750 million last year and has pledged, in early April, another $500 million this year.

He also hailed the Kingdom's hosting, in collaboration with the United Nations (UN), of a virtual donors' conference for Yemen 2020, on Tuesday, aiming at raising the awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and pronouncing financial pledges to meet the basic needs out there.

Lowcock, in a press statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), said that among 41 main programs sponsored by the UN in Yemen, over 30 will be shut shortly within the coming weeks if we fail to secure extra funds.

Relief organizations, he pointed out, are still having access to the Yemeni people, as there is a lot of staff on the ground with thousands of Yemeni relief workers serving under the umbrella of the UN, Red Cross and other non-governmental organizations.

Lowcock added that Yemen stands in need to $2.4 billion, in addition to another urgently needed $180, to combat novel coronavirus, from now until next December.
