Twenty-three people were injured early Thursday after a Russian passenger plane carrying more than 230 people conducted an emergency landing after a collision with birds, Russian news agency Interfax reported, according to dpa.

Most of the 23 injured people, among them several children, suffered cuts and bruises, but one was seriously injured, the report said.

The plane, operated by Russia's Ural Airlines, collided with a flock of seagulls shortly after taking off from Zhukovsky International Airport near Moscow, forcing the pilots to land with the motor switched off and the wheels still retracted.

Images and video footage showed the Airbus 321 plane after the landing in a cornfield about 1 kilometre away from the airport.
