The SaudiInvestment Recycling Company (SIRC), a subsidiary of the PublicInvestment Fund company, has announced its intention to build the firstconstruction waste recycling facility in the capital, Riyadh, and to use thewaste after recycling for road and housing building.

Thewaste sorting and recycling facility is just the beginning of a series ofsimilar facilities that will be launched over the next three years, with abroader goal of recycling all waste, such as fertilizers, paper, plastics, andmetals, SIRC said in a statement quoted by Bloomberg.

The first phase of building will be with the use of recycled materials by the end of this year.

SaudiArabia plans to build the first construction waste recycling facility in thecapital, Riyadh, in an effort to reform the waste management industry ratherthan landfilling, Bloomberg said.

Themost effective waste management was among the goals of Saudi Vision 2030announced in 2016 as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recycles only about 10% of the50 million tons of recyclable materials it produces each year, according tostudies conducted by the Public Investment Fund.

SIRC wants the new facility to recycle about half of the estimated 5million tons of annual construction and demolition waste in the capital, Riyadhby 2035.

Thewaste will be converted into materials for road building and housing projects,including a project for 35,000 housing units, SIRC said.

SIRC also plans to build a municipal waste management, treatment, andsorting facility. Riyadh Municipality is currently implementing a pilot projectto get the population to sort the waste in different containers for organic andinorganic waste.
