Saudi Arabia stresses the goal of free Middle East from mass destruction weapons

Saudi Arabia stressed aiming to free Middle East from weaponsof mass destruction, whether nuclear, biological or chemical, and seeking toachieve this in cooperation with the international community, noting its hopefor international support to achieve the endeavors of all countries in theregion.

Speaking at the meeting of the States Parties to theBiological Weapons Convention, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, Ambassador of theUnited Nations in Geneva, affirmed the support of the statements of theorganizing groups and the efforts of organizing and managing the meeting.

The preparation of preparatory documents and participationin the United Nations Conference on the establishment of a zone free ofnuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, whichwas held from 18 to 22 November last.

The Kingdom welcomed the outcome of the Conference, whichadopted an agreed agenda, a comprehensive and balanced program of work thatwould allow the participation of the invited parties in its stages, as well asa roadmap on the preparation and establishment of subsequent sessions, as itpromotes multilateralism for disarmament, including the arms embargo. And theestablishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of massdestruction in the Middle East.

Ambassador Al-Wasel pointed out that the Kingdom'scommitment to these agreements and their implementation at the national andinternational levels is an extension of its consistent policy aimed atenhancing cooperation to ban all types of weapons of mass destruction, preventtheir proliferation, and contribute to efforts to make the Middle East a zonefree of all such weapons. With the support of the international community as alegitimate right of the peoples of the region, and a main pillar for thepromotion of security and peace at the regional and international levels.

He pointed out that the Kingdom is one of the firstcountries to accede to international treaties related to banning weapons ofmass destruction and non-proliferation, and agreements on the codification ofhazardous materials and ways to deal with them and to strengthen cooperationand coordination to protect civilians from their dangers.
