Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Saudi Arabia's Governor to the International Atomic Energy Agency, confirmed Saudi Arabia's interest in nuclear security.

He also expressed its keenness to be one of the main components of the infrastructure of its national project for peaceful uses of atomic energy.

The Prince referred to the establishment of the Nuclear and Radiological Monitoring Authority, which has begun its work and responsibilities in the regulatory aspects related to security, safety and nuclear guarantees.

Saudi Arabia Supports international decisions

He also affirmed Saudi Arabia's support for international decisions in this field, verification of human protection and the environment. Besides, promulgation of the nuclear law that includes aspects related to nuclear security in line with international frameworks and standards. Adding to organizing Saudi Arabia for workshops and seminars on developing human capacities related to nuclear security areas.

This came in a speech delivered by Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz today during his chairmanship of the delegation of Saudi Arabia participating in the nuclear security conference currently held in the capital Vienna.

He also noted that Saudi Arabia has consistently supported international resolutions related to nuclear security, including Security Council Resolution 1540, and ratification of the Convention on the Physical Protection, Amendment, and Support of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) for the Code of Conduct for the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources.

In addition to that it is a party in the International Convention for the Suppression of Nuclear Terrorism. From this standpoint Saudi Arabia stresses the importance of giving this aspect more international attention. Especially in the tensions in the Middle East region, and the spread of a number of militias and terrorist groups.

Specialized center for combating nuclear terrorism

Saudi Arabia also calls on the international community to reinforce all measures aimed at combating nuclear terrorism. As Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz referred to Saudi Arabia's fight against terrorism in general, and nuclear in particular; Saudi Arabia initiated a donation of $10mn to establish a specialized center for combating nuclear terrorism.

This was in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, whose construction will begin in the coming period.

In the end, he expressed his hope that this conference will achieve the goals that it aspires to.
